Like this - The Chinese character for "Double" is "雙". The origin of the character was showing a hand holding two birds. Over thousands of years it is simplified and turn into "雙".

kaka...interesting! next week is the Chinese New Year and this year is dedicate for Dogs!! To welcome this CNY, illo friday invites us to draw CATS!!! How interesting...okee then, as a Cats person :P, lemme draw this one for this arrogant yet awesome creature !! yaya, i intentionally make it lonely...cos strangely, we chinese ppl dedicate each year for one animal, but cats strangely are not being listed on the 12 "animal gods", so i believe it is the gesture they'd keep to welcome the year of their "enemy"...yeah, envy at heart but try to keep their cool, aloof and "i don't really care" attitude :D

anyway, wish everyone has a marvelous Year of Dogs :D

i don't really have official training on painting...and more i draw, more i found the real skill i'm lacking. yet i'm a really lazy person, instead of class room training, i bought quite a few good waterdrawing books and force myself to really sit down and practice the "watercoloring 101" skill: color and value, wash and wash and wash.

here's are the simple exercises i "copied" from my "copybook". i'm a person really difficult to really abandon the idea in my mind and strictly follow other's instruction...kaka...this is the very first time i really do it and whew, i really learn a lot! these practices really let me have a new understanding of watercoloring, like a chilling refreshing for my old mind. Oh, i'm fallen in love with watercoloring AGAIN!!

it is an "expired" submit for last week illo friday. i didn't draw becos i was too busy in celebrating my bday XP and crazily busy with my work...but the most accurate reason for not able to draw is becos when i finally got the time to sit down and plan for my illo friday submit, i found out i've lost my mobile in taxi...again....sad....so i finally draw this casual illo, about how the rhythm of my planned life being broken by this furious yet stupid accident :-(

Rework of wedding invitation card

it was originally an invitation card i've made for my fren's wedding. i've cutout the characters and reworked it into this smaller version. The original card was published with the poem i "borrowered" from Carrie in Sex & the City. If it is gonna republished for my next fren's wedding, i'd chosen this poem from

THEY'RE BOTH CONVINCED
that a sudden passion joined them.
Such certainty is beautiful,but uncertainty is more beautiful still

Since they'd never met before, they're sure
that there'd been nothing between them.
But what's the word from the streets, staircases, hallways—
perhaps they've passed each other a million times?
I want to ask themif they don't remember—
a moment face to facein some revolving door?
perhaps a "sorry" muttered in a crowd?
a curt "wrong number" caught in the receiver?
but I know the answer.
No, they don't remember

They'd be amazed to hear
that Chance has been toying with them
now for years.
Not quite ready yetto become their Destiny,
it pushed them close, drove them apart,
it barred their path,stifling a laugh,

refresh after my Shanghai vacation. i comes up with the concept of this week illustration friday theme during my trip. under the cruel mid day sun, i rested in the Han-yuan bookstore+cafe and laid my eyes on the old street...the linden trees, the buildings, everything reminds me about the old shanghai that is gone with the wind...that moment the vision of this drawing float across my head. i hope it catch the theme rite, and hope it can catch a little bit of the old shanghai flair...

i like watching plants grow. especially when i'm tired, unhappy, depressed, lost the passion of living, i would water and pamper all my little greens in my house, watching them grow silently can remind me the miracles of life and regain my power :D amongst all, witnessing the growing of water plants in glass container gives me the largest pleasure. once i cut off one leave from the mother plant and put it in a glass pot, within days i noticed how fast it's buds stretched into long roots...everyday returned home i can see it grow longer, grow "curler", it grow so wildly in water and eventually becomes a beautiful line art alive! at that moment, looking at this little leave, i see the world. i see life. see some of my plants in real here: (oh...they all stemp from the same plant! xD)

**really have no time for drawing this week...but this idea has been in my head for sometime since i saw the subject, thus still wanna submit it...this sketch is far from good, forgive my careless sketching this week, hope can finish it in future :D**

So, the subject this week is "Reflection". This sketch is inspired by a kid who sat in front of me in mass last sunday. He's so sweet, his smile is like angel. And next to him, is a really restless boy who is tryinig to do anything but appropriate behavior in a church. Suddenly I realize, each child is the reflection of their parents. And in every child, we see the reflection of our own self...not sure if u get my feeling...:)

this week illo Friday's topic is "wisdom". hmm...it is very difficult to actually define what is "wisdom", yet for me, what Cicero said might be the most appropriately stated: "The Function of Wisdom is to discriminate between good and evil". whilst i believe surviving in today's world, able to see the good from the evils (& vice versa) and then shape one's own mind to well balance both in everyday life is the true wisdom.

This is piece is my first entry created mostly by computer. I'm just learning to use photoshop, thus still have many area need to be improved! so, hope can hear some comment from everyone then i can improve :D

Oops, this drawing is base on my pencil sketch...i actually love my original sketch more so i've scanned and post it here anyway. when i have time i'd finish this drawing...with my own hand (keke, which is what i still found more comfortable to play with...keke ^_^)

Illustration Friday this week calls for drawings on "Empty". Whew, big subject.

"Empty" is not just an important subject of art in oriental world, it is an art itself. The struggle of balance between Emptiness and Fullness founded the whole school of Eastern Philosophy, defined the standard of beauty, shaped the perfect way of living:

"謙受益，滿招損" Empty your hands, then you can receive more. Open your mind, then you can learn more. Humble your heart, then you can be blessed more. On the contrary, the arrogant and conceited would only see vain and and failing...

It is said that Confucius once made a rounded container. When filled almost full of water, it would stand gracefully balanced on the holder, yet when it is fully filled, it would overturn and spill out all the water. My submit this week is one of my study of Chinese painting which abstractly capture this spilling jar. The jar is full, thus it is empty. Because of its emptiness, it can filled and full again. originally I wish I have come up with sth more seriously drawn, cos' after all, it is my very first entry for illustration friday,but having give it the second thought, i still found this simple piece most able to catch my reflection on this week subject: "Aging".

actually this drawing immediately float into my mind when i saw the subject "aging". Aging walks parallel with history of mankind; everyone faces aging since our birth, no escape; thus for me. aging is one of the many faces of life, so shouldn't be afraid of, shouldn't feel bad bout it, instead we should celebrate and be grateful with all the fruits that it bore - wisdom, memories, laughter....and you name it :)

yah, we can't avoid aging, but we can choose how to face it, rite?
